YOUNGER SINGLES SAY “I DO” TO PRE-NUPS

Lavalife.com poll finds that prenuptial agreements are on the rise among younger singles

Toronto, Ontario, July, 2008 – Young singles may still believe in “always and forever,” but that doesn’t mean they won’t ask their soon-to-be spouse to sign on the dotted line. Lavalife, (http://www.lavalife.com) a leader in the singles industry for over 20 years and lavalifePrime (http://www.prime.lavalife.com), a social dating site created exclusively for singles 45 and up, recently polled over 5,000 singles to uncover how different generations feel about prenuptial agreements.

When asked if they would require a prenuptial agreement upon entering marriage, an astounding 68% of single Boomers indicated it wasn’t for them, while nearly half (46%) of the younger generation of singles felt a prenuptial agreement is absolutely necessary when tying the knot.

Statistics show that on average, younger people are marrying later than ever before and are entering into marriage with more assets like cars, apartments, retirement savings, and stock options. Some young singles are also looking to protect themselves against credit card and student loan debt that their new spouse may have accumulated years before their relationship started. Young newlyweds Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are the perfect example of pre-nup trendsetters, proving that even though they’re young they still have a lot to lose if they were to divorce.

“The younger generation of singles tends to have a different view on marriage. While they are hoping to live happily ever after, they are still being realistic and taking every necessary precaution to protect their assets. Getting a pre-nup has become as commonplace as registering for china,” says Kim Hughes, Editor in Chief of Lavalife’s online magazine, Click. “On the other hand, the poll suggests that Baby Boomers are more concerned with finding happiness and compatibility and are less concerned with heavily safeguarding their financial situation from a future spouse, proving that Boomers are living a more carefree lifestyle than any other generation.”

Lavalife’s poll results clearly show the increasing prevalence of prenuptial agreements in modern young marriages, so whether you are male, female, rich, poor, famous, or an average Joe, signing a pre-nup before walking down the isle isn’t so uncommon anymore.
